A separate metal or plastic bracket is not always required to install a barcode scanner module. For compact kiosks and other OEM equipment, the scanner can be fixed directly behind the panel using pre-applied adhesive or mounting holes built into the module housing.

The important point is to keep the scanner stable, correctly aligned and close to the panel opening.

Direct Mounting with Pre-Applied Adhesive

XTIOT XT206M1 and XT206H1 have pre-applied double-sided adhesive around the scanning window.

During assembly, the protective film is removed and the module is attached directly behind the panel opening. This avoids designing and producing an additional bracket.

Direct adhesive mounting can provide several practical benefits:

• Fewer mechanical parts

• Faster assembly

• Lower bracket and screw costs

• Less space required inside the equipment

• More consistent distance between the scanner and panel

XT206M1 is suitable when a compact 640 x 480 scanner is enough. XT206H1 uses a 1280 x 800 CMOS image sensor and is better suited to mobile screen QR codes and codes that require more image detail.

Prepare the Panel Before Mounting

The mounting surface should be flat, clean and dry. Dust, oil or an uneven surface can reduce the strength of the adhesive.

The scanner must be aligned before it is pressed into place. The lens should face the centre of the opening, and the panel must not block its field of view.

For mass production, a simple positioning guide can help workers place every module in the same position. This is more reliable than aligning each scanner by eye.

Keep the Scanner Close to the Opening

One advantage of direct mounting is that the scanner can sit close to the front panel.

If the scanner is installed too far behind a small opening, the panel may block part of the camera view. Large QR codes or phone screens may then become difficult to scan, even if the scanner itself has enough reading performance.

The thickness of any extra tape should also be controlled. Adding different layers of foam tape can change the installation depth and scanning angle.

Mounting with Built-In Screw Holes

Adhesive is not the only bracket-free option.

XTIOT XT206M3 and XT206H3 have a built-in acrylic front window and mounting holes. They can be fixed directly to screw posts inside the equipment without using a separate bracket.

These models do not have pre-applied double-sided adhesive. They are suitable when the equipment manufacturer prefers screw mounting or needs a covered scanner window.

Check the Installation Before Mass Production

The complete installation should be tested with the final panel, opening and protective cover. The test should include actual paper barcodes and mobile screen QR codes at the expected reading positions.

Also check the mounting strength under the equipment’s real temperature and humidity conditions. A scanner that stays fixed in an office test may face different conditions inside a refrigerated cabinet, outdoor kiosk or vending machine.

For equipment with limited internal space, direct mounting with XT206M1 or XT206H1 can remove the need for a separate bracket. For screw mounting with a covered front window, XT206M3 or XT206H3 provides another simple installation option.
