On January 6 local time, Alibaba Group and GS1 Australia signed a strategic cooperation memorandum in Melbourne. The two parties will make full use of their respective resource advantages in e-commerce and other fields, jointly promote the standardization of commodity barcodes in Australian export commodities, establish a commodity traceability mechanism, and allow more Australian high-quality commodities to enter China.

Commodity barcode is the globally unique code of each product, which contains information such as the country of production, manufacturer, production date, classification number, etc., and is called the "identity card" and "international passport" of the commodity. After this strategic cooperation, Chinese consumers can obtain product information and place orders by scanning barcodes on Taobao with their mobile phones. If you are shopping overseas, you can also get Chinese information about related products by scanning the code.

Russell Stucki, chairman of the Australian Article Numbering Center, said on the spot that the signing of the strategic cooperation memorandum will help Australian brands adopting GS1 standards enter the Chinese market and reach hundreds of millions of Chinese consumers, allowing Chinese consumers to enjoy more pure Australian products.

In August 2016, Alibaba reached a strategic cooperation with China Goods Numbering Center (GS1 China) to promote the standardization of product information. Subsequently, in September, together with the China Article Numbering Center and the International Article Numbering Association, a joint statement was issued on the Global Data Synchronization Project (GDSN).
