Adding MRZ reading to a document terminal does not always require a complete passport scanner.

For devices that already have their own screen, controller and housing, a bare scanner board is often easier to install. The XTIOT XT6996M is designed for this type of OEM project.

The module reads the printed MRZ area on passports and supported ID documents. After recognition, the MRZ text is sent to the host controller through the 3.3V TTL interface.

This makes it suitable for:

• Hotel check-in terminals

• Visitor registration devices

• Passport self-service kiosks

• Ticketing machines

• ID document readers

The XT6996M is supplied as a bare board, allowing the customer to design the installation position and front window according to the device housing.

It can also read common 1D and 2D barcodes, so the same module may be used for both document data and QR code input.

The module reads information from the printed document image. It does not read the electronic chip inside a passport or ID card. If the project requires chip data, the host device needs a separate NFC reader.
